Many students at NKUHT and other tertiary institutions in Taiwan will complete internships and/or courses of study in other countries, such as The United States of America,Australia, Singapore, Switzerland, and Italy. However, many students admit to having obtained little meaningful knowledge of their host country’s culture before travelling. This can lead to problems, as students may arrive in another cultural environment with limited understanding of local norms and customs, which can result in misunderstandings, awkwardness and embarrassment, and unintentional offence being caused.
Students living in another country for extended periods (more than two weeks) can, if they have not already practiced using transcultural communication skills, also be prone to isolation. They may remain in their ‘comfort zone’, and will not learn as much about the cultural environment that surrounds them as someone who has already gained the knowledge and skills needed to deal effectively with transcultural situations.
This course is designed to raise awareness of transcultural situations and to provide practical insights that allow participants to reflect on and apply what they are learning immediately.
