Abstract

International business deals with all the commercial transactions that occur between two or more countries. The best modes of operation in an international setting may differ from those of the purely domestic business context. International business involves activities such as globalization, exporting and importing, dealing with foreign governments, cultures and regulations, as well as domestic regulations affecting those firms looking to do business outside their home country.
This course will introduce students to the practices of doing business in today's globalized world. It starts with an overview of the Globalization phenomenon and the key differences that characterized the various countries of the Globe. Then, students will be introduced to trends affecting the global trade and investment environment as well as the strategy and structure of international business. Finally, issues related to international business operations such as production, marketing, logistics, human resources management will be introduced.

Course Objective

- Introduce students to the field of international business, its fundamentals and its impacts on the global economy

- Understand the underpinning theories of international business, environmental factors affecting international activities, and the management of business functional operations in an international context.

- Analyze international situations and evaluate contemporary issues in international business.

- Analyze the cultural, political, legal, and economic environments that affect international business operations.

These outcomes will be accomplished through some case study analysis to expand on the fundamental issues in international business to ensure a scope of understanding in the class. Reading assignments will provide an in-depth understanding of specific areas of international business. Going beyond generalizations, the reading assignments (the economist, HBR, …) will provide up-to-date and down to earth examples of the abstract theories of the textbook and lectures.
