摘要

Welcome to the course Orofacial Pain and Neuroscience. I am Chia-Shu Lin,
a professor in the Department of Dentistry and an adjunct professor at the
Institute of Brain Science. My academic background uniquely bridges the fields
of dentistry and neuroscience, with a particular focus on brain imaging. This
course provides an introduction to the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying
oral functions and dysfunctions, as well as the foundational principles of
their clinical management. This course provides an introductory overview of
orofacial pain and its underlying neuroscientific mechanisms. Over this
four-week short course, you will explore fundamental concepts of pain and
nociception, oral somatosensory function and multisensory integration, neural
control of mastication and swallowing, and peripheral and central mechanisms of
pain processing.

課程目標

The course will help you grasp a foundational understanding of how sensory and motor functions of the orofacial system are processed and regulated by the nervous system. The course, in particular, focuses on the neural mechanisms related to oral health and function, including pain and nociception, oral somatosensory function and multisensory integration, neural control of mastication and swallowing, and peripheral and central mechanisms of pain processing, laying a foundation for further learning on oral diseases and treatment.

Chia-Shu Lin 林嘉澍

Chia-Shu Lin is one of the very few researchers in the world who have the expertise and research experience in both brain science (neuroimaging) and clinical dentistry, with multiple publications on geriatric oral function and pain/anxiety related to clinical management (among 2% Top Scientists of research outputs according to the Stanford/Elsevier Ranking). I am the principal investigator of the Laboratory of Brain and Oral Functions, one of the leading labs worldwide pioneering the use of non-invasive neuroimaging methods, including structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), to investigate the brain features of oral sensorimotor function, orofacial pain and anxiety, and age-related changes in oral functions.
