摘要

After four decades of accelerated economic growth and the development of integrated supply chains, the Asia-Pacific has become the most competitive region and an important engine of economic growth in the world. The Asia-Pacific is characterized by the presence of strong states, with a distinctive vision on their role for the development of the region. This online course is designed to introduce students to the most relevant topics in the understanding of the development of the Asia-Pacific as a region.

Through the presentation of key theoretical concepts and historical events, the instructor will provide an overview of the relevant topics that characterize relations between the different states in this part of the world. However, it is important to note that the main goal of this course is not to discuss regional integration, but to analyze the major themes that characterize the Asia-Pacific as a region. From the rise of Japan in the late 19th century to the emergence of China more than one hundred years later, this course will also present issues like the nuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, the relations between both sides of the Taiwan Strait, and the different challenges for the development of the countries and societies in Southeast Asia, such as maritime disputes and environmental issues.

Therefore, geopolitical and security elements will be highlighted throughout the course, as a way to emphasize the importance of those topics, and of actors such as the United States and China, in the ongoing development of the Asia-Pacific region. The different videos in this course make use of short lectures by the instructor, together with some additional materials in this platform, so the students can have flexibility in their study progress. Being prepared by the College of International Affairs at Tamkang University, this course will provide knowledge complementary to the study of international relations, world politics, geopolitics, political science, and other related sub-fields from social sciences and humanities.

課程目標

This course will bring students closer to the most relevant notions and topics related to the development of the Asia-Pacific region. Many concepts from International Relations and geopolitics will be reviewed, together with historical events that might contribute to the better appreciation and understanding of those hot topics. Being a course that uses English as a means of instruction (EMI), it also will also allow students to become familiar with those issues, but in an English language environment. As a result, students will also be able to easily access international media and scholarly materials, gaining a deeper insight into the different relevant themes in the development of the Asia-Pacific region.
